Moving Home

Moving home can be very stressful, with so much to co-ordinate and organise the list can seem endless.

The key to an easier move is in the planning. If you follow our simple guide to moving your home then it should be as stress free as possible.

Moving day checklist

==> Resource - Decide if you are going to move yourself with your friends help or are you going to use specialist removal firms.

==> If you are going to move yourself you will need to organise transport,so you will need to perhaps hire a van. You can drive up to a 7.5 ton truck on a normal driving licence - if it has a tail lift it could make your life easier.

==> If you are going to use a removal firm then get several quotes from different firms.

==> If your items are valuable then you might want to take out aninsurance policy to protect against loss or damage. Some removal firms already have this.

==> You might want to photograph valuables prior to moving in case of breakages, they will help support your insurance claim.

==> Check out the weather - if it looks like rain you might want to protect the carpets in the home you are leaving and also the one you are moving to.

==> If you are moving yourself you will need plenty of boxes, so you might want to ask local shop keepers for any spare boxes

==> Have a good clear out - if you have not used something for a while then think do you really need it. You can either throw it away or even go to a car boot and sell it.

==> A few days before the move you will need to start getting ready.

==> If you have decided to use a removal company then make sure they have the address of your existing home and where you are moving to. Provide directions if necessary.

==> Vital supplies will be needed as soon as you walk into your new home. Make sure you have a box full of the essentials, tea, coffee, biscuits, snacks and don't forget toilet rolls.

==> Make sure the loft has been cleared, the garage and garden sheds are packed up ready to move.

==> If you have pets make sure that you have made arrangements for them to be stored and looked after properly.

==> Do your final load of washing, and disconnect the washing machine ready.

==> Take apart any furniture which needs to be broken down so that they can easily be transported - make sure any screws and fixings are stored safely and securely the other end so that they can be quickly reassembled.

==> Empty your fridge and freezer, and switch off. It will be important to defrost the freezer part as you don-t want water leaking everywhere.

==> Label all keys so that the people moving into your house know what key is for where.

==> Disconnect and pack away all electrical equipment - stereos, TVs etc.

==> Leaving cleaning materials to the end, you will probably want to leave your house clean for the new owners, same as you might need to clean your new home before you start unpacking your property.

==> Make labels for every room in your new home, and make sure they correspond with the labels you have put on your boxes.

On the day of the move

==> Confirm arrangements to gain access to your new home

==> Make sure the estate agent, solicitor, removal company and the person you are buying your new home off have your mobile number so should they need to get hold of you they can

==> If you have a mobile phone make sure that it is fully charged

==> Make sure all the boxes are labelled accurately

==> Make sure boxes with fragile items in are labelled and make sure the person moving the fragile boxes knows it

==> Make sure everyone who is driving knows where your new house is.

==> As things are moved out and there is space in a room make sure you clean it to a satisfactory level

==> Leave the house secure

==> As soon as you get to your new house label all the rooms so that the removal company know where to put your property
